Dietary Information
With braces on, it is best to stick to a diet that consists of only soft foods. Avoid consuming hard or crunchy foods such as nuts, chips, crackers, candy, ice, or apples as they tend to break the braces off of your teeth. Likewise chewy and sticky foods such as gum, licorice, or caramels tend to pull the wires and ties out of place. Lastly, it is best to avoid drinking sodas or any carbonated beverages as the acid in the sodas may cause white spot lesions on the surfaces of your teeth. These lesions are difficult to eliminate and are noticeable when your braces are removed.
For patients with ceramic braces, it is best to avoid dark colored foods like curry and jerk seasonings, as well as drinks such as coffee and tea. These items may stain your braces over time causing them to lose their clear/white appearance. For a more detailed summary of foods to avoid click here
